How To Stay Focused When Working From Home

Working from home can be very enticing for working moms. There’s no commute. No dress code. No rushing you and your kids out of the house early in the morning. Working from home can be great. So great in fact, that sometimes it can be hard to stay focused on your actual work. You can be distracted by your daily home to-do list, trying to squeeze in some personal responsibilities in the middle of the workday, and eventually, you’ll find yourself making up for that time working late at night. By using some tips to keep your productivity on track, you can embrace the comforts of home while still getting your work done.

A Designated Work Space

Working from home can cause the lines of professional and personal life to blur. While wearing pajamas all day and doing a load of laundry in-between conference calls can seem like obvious benefits of working from home, it can be easy to let your home life distract you from your work responsibilities. Creating a designated workspace which you only use during working hours, you can cut down some distractions and focus more. It is a challenge to keep your home life separate from your work life even in an office, but with a designated work area in your home, you will feel more relaxed and focused when designating a separate area for your work and for your family.

Establish Working Hours

It may sound contradicting, but the best way to work from home is to pretend that you are not working from home. Try not to set appointments or run errands in the middle of the day, blurring the boundaries between work and personal life. By setting “office hours” for working from home, it can help you clarify what is a task that you should be doing during that time. Ask yourself, “If you were in an office, would I do this task during the day?” If the answer is no, do that task before or after your “office hours”. This may be challenging, and there may be days where you have to take care of responsibility during the day, but establishing hours during the day solely concentrated on working can help you feel not guilty when you’re not working after your “office hours”.

Dress for Success

While it may seem amazing to just roll out of bed and onto your computer in your pajamas, it can make you feel less motivated to actually work. Elevating your appearance, even when it’s just you and your laptop, can make you feel more inspired and energized to do productive work. It doesn’t have to be much. Even just washing your face and putting on jeans and a sweater can make you feel so much better and ready to be productive throughout the day.

Find What Works For You

Everyone has a technique to get organized, and you need to find yours. For example, some people struggle to grasp how anyone can use a digital calendar to plan their day. Others would be lost without reminder alerts from their calendar on their phone. Other ways to stay organized and meet deadlines are mapping out ideas on whiteboards, notebooks, writing a to-do list, or even using a task management app. Find the right tools that are the best fit for you so you can have a productive and organized day.

Get Out of the House

When you’re in the comfort of your own home rather in an office, it may seem harder to get outside as often as you used to, but the best ideas and inspirations come when you’re experiencing new environments and new people. Instead of closing yourself off from the world to do work, take 5 minutes to take a walk and get some coffee. This can make you feel more relaxed and ready to take on anything.
